The Dude's Friend's Apostrophe

Spotted this wonderfully humorous take on an apostrophe error at a blog called Catalog Living. It is a creative and amusing blog that gives a fictional behind-the-scenes look at "the exciting lives of the people who live in your catalogs".

Feeling Possesive...

Gary had no idea who The Mather was, but he got the message loud and clear not to mess with his iced tea.

I wonder if The Mather is friends with The Dude?

The Mather is the head of household. It's similar to the Scottish custom of referring to the clan head as, e.g., The MacGregor. The 's indicates possession. It means that the mortgage is paid off and that the bank has no claim on the house.

Faldone - Very interesting; I had never heard of "The Mather" or "The MacGregor" being used to refer to the head of the household. I wonder if the catalog copywriter/editor is familiar with these terms?
