Linguistics Quotation Favorites - Alfred Korzybski

Something to think about on the first Monday of this new year-

If words are not things, or maps are not the actual territory, then, obviously, the only possible link between the objective world and the linguistic world is found in structure, and structure alone.

This reminds me of the story of the math professor who was lecturing his class and showing a proof on the chalkboard. He got to a certain point in the proof and said, "Thus it is obvious ..." He put the chalk down and walked out of the classroom. About twenty minutes later, when the bewildered students were about to get up and leave, he came back, picked up the chalk, and said, "I was right. It is obvious."
