Huh. I did not know that was a transitive verb. (In fact, I'm not sure I've ever heard or seen the verb, just the noun and more frequently the adjective.) Had I been forced to guess, I think I would have guessed it took AT (he vituperated at them) - or ABOUT, in a different sense.
